Design Considerations: Extra Large Wall Art

When purchasing wall art, collectors often want a piece that will make a statement. This can be achieved with artwork of any size, but often the walls which are focal points – above couches and beds, or in landings and stairways – are the largest in a space.

Here are some things to think about when purchasing large(r) wall art:

• The dimensions of your wall might help dictate the orientation of the painting. A wall taller than wide might be best suited for a portrait orientation, a wider wall might be best suited for a landscape orientation. Squares are more flexible. There are no hard rules, but this is a good starting point.
• A piece can just as easily be too crowded as it can be too small for a wall. For wall art to be effective, it needs room to breathe. A large piece should have a minimum of 10″ empty space on each side around it.
• If nothing is going below the piece, its vertical centre should be around (or just above) eye height, which is around 58″ for the average person and lower than most people think. For larger pieces, this often means the bottom edge of the piece is fairly close to the ground.
• If you plan to hang your painting above something, be careful to ensure there is enough vertical space—we recommend the bottom edge of the artwork to be 8-12 inches above any furnishings below it.

• If you’re buying big, focus on what you love. Home decor is only part of the equation, and in our opinion it should be a small part. Let the art speak for itself!
