Design Considerations: Diptychs

Artworks in series mean that a single composition, or design, has been split into more than one panel. When the panels are placed beside or on top of each other, the full composition is revealed. In some cases, the individual panels are designed such that they can (optionally) stand alone.

A diptych refers to a two-piece series – the artwork is split into two panels.

Some factors to consider when selecting series artworks:

  • Dip, trip, and polyp-tychs can offer a sense of narrative flow to a piece. The slight separation between each panel often causes the viewer to absorb the painting in a specific (perhaps intentional) order.
  • Dimensions we provide for diptychs assume the panels are touching, with no space between them. This will not be the case when they are installed in your space. Allow for at least 3″ of spacing between panels when considering how the work will fit in your space.
  • Continuing from the point above, buying series art can increase the presence of your artwork by adding more size on the wall, often for a smaller price tag than a larger single artwork.
  • We offer digital mockups to visualize artworks in your space, which will help determine if the scale is appropriate. This is also helpful when hanging the work, and deciding how much space to give between each panel. To proceed with mockups, reserve any painting you like.
  • Diptychs are usually hung beside (or on top of) each other, but they do NOT have to be. We have seen effective instances of series artworks being split across different walls and rooms, where the composition or narrative flow is maintained. When done succesfully, this can create a sense of cohesiveness and continuity in a space.
