What is “Mixed Media” Artwork?

Mixed Media art evolved organically as a result of artists’ curious and experimental tendencies. By definition… there is no singular definition. It simply means that the artist combined different techniques and materials to produce an artwork. This categorization is very broad, and can include works which are simply a combination of two mediums (such as acrylic and ink), or which bring together a very broad and diverse mix of materials, such as a collage. Generally, when art is referred to as Mixed Media, it is leaning closer to the latter.

Another way to think about it: when the list of materials which went into an artwork becomes too long and annoying to write out, we might be inclined to categorize the piece as Mixed Media, and call it a day.

Artists find inspiration everywhere. They are the ultimate recyclers, often making products out of things that would otherwise be considered garbage. Some of our favourite materials which fall into the long list of Mixed Media from artists we represent include toilet paper, tree bark, and toothpaste!

Identifying Mixed Media Artworks

It’s very common for a Mixed Media piece to have a three-dimensional aspect, with something tactile protruding out of the canvas. This is because an artwork generally includes more than just paint mediums before an artist categorizes it as Mixed Media (although this is not strictly true).

It’s also very common for mixed media works to appear as a form of collage, or appear like a mishmash of ideas (like a scapbook). Due to the combination of different forms and experimental nature of the medium, it lends itself to work which explores topics from various angles, often via abstract or non-linear connections.
