Intro to Neon Colours

Neons are ultra bright verisions of primary and secondary colours on the colour wheel. As a result of their brightness, neon colours are luminescent – they emit light – and this is what distinguishes them from other colours.

Design Considerations

• • Neon colours add visual presence. They are bold and energetic, and immediately draw the viewer’s eye.
  • Fluorescent colors are in-your-face and artificial, and some people feel that use of them in design is not tasteful (but, of course, this is BS!).
  • Relative to muted tones which are popular in modern spaces for their classiness and restraint, neons are affiliated with brashness and excess, which are not inherently negative!
  • Other ideas and sentiments related to neon colours:
    Youthfulness, frivolity, carefree, trippy, dangerous, optimisitic.
  • An accent (such as a painting) with fluorescent colours will instantly liven up a room with lots of whites, greys, or neutral, non-invasive colours.
  • Conversely, neons can be used as a holistic theme in a space, providing tons of personality and energy. But this hard to get right and easy to overdo!
  • Due to their demand on the eyes, neons are better suited to a sleek, organized space as opposed to a busy one, where they will contribute to a sense of clutter.
