A [Way Oversimplified] History of Painting in Visual Art

Painting as a visual arts medium has a long and varied history. Its beginnings are often attributed to prehistoric times, with cave paintings created by early humans using natural pigments. In ancient civilizations like Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Greece, painting evolved and took on religious and narrative themes.

During the Renaissance, artists like Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo ushered in a new era of realism and perspective, exploring human anatomy with scientific precision on canvas. The 17th century witnessed the Dutch Golden Age and the Baroque period, with artists such as Rembrandt and Vermeer using light and shadow to showcase their technical mastery and create dramatic compositions.

The 19th century and the introduction of photography brought further revolutions in painting. No longer was the exclusive goal of painting to capture a scene with the greatest possible accuracy. The Romantic movement embraced emotion and imagination, while the Impressionists like Monet, Cassatt, and Renoir captured fleeting light and atmosphere, focusing on subjective accuracy and capturing a feeling rather than exactly what the eye can see. The 20th century witnessed diverse movements veering further into abstract experimentation, from Cubism with Picasso and Braque to modern abstraction with Kandinsky, Krasner, Martin, and Pollock.

Painting remains a vibrant and evolving medium in the contemporary art world. Traditional techniques persist alongside experimental approaches, allowing artists to convey their visions through various styles, subjects, and mediums. More than ever before, curators, instutions, and galleries, are focusing on drawing attention to the work of important painters that have presently, and throughout history, been under-respresented or suppresed – including women, BIPOC, and LGBTQ+ artists.

What is the significance of “original” paintings?
Generally speaking, a painting is made by hand and thus is original by definition. That said, some artists photograph their paintings and reproduce the images as prints at a lower price as a source of additional income. We guarantee that any painting we sell is one-of-a-kind, meaning the artist or gallery will NOT be reproducing the painting in any format for a different customer.

What mediums are the paintings?
The majority of the paintings are either in acrylic or oil paint (or a combination). But we cannot name all the mediums included in the vast collection of paintings shown on ArtMatch. The collection span across hundreds of different mediums, such as gouache, watercolour, and mixed media works, which can include found elements such as tissue paper, stencils, etc.! We even showcase some 3-dimensional paintings that double as sculpture. The exact medium for each painting is specified on the artwork page.

Are the paintings framed?
Some paintings are sold including a frame, because the artist has already installed it. Whenever this is the case, the artwork listing has an image of the frame, and the price and dimensions include the frame. The artwork listing will also clearly specify that the painting is framed — although there is always an option to buy it unframed if you wish to add a different one or showcase it unframed.

Can I request an original piece to be created as a reproduction?
This is generally not accommodated by ArtMatch or our artists, to maintain the integrity and originality of the artwork. However, contact us for alternative solutions for a project in need of lower-price reproductions.

Which Painting Mediums Are Sustainable?

We are often asked if there is a paint medium which is more environmentally sustainable than others. Unfortunately, this is not a straightforward question. Each medium has pros and cons from an environmental standpoint, and artists cannot easily switch between them as it takes years to develop skills in any single one. There are, however, more eco-friendly paint products within each medium.

One thing we can say from direct experience is that artists are incredibly inventive with reusing and giving life to materials which would otherwise be thrown aside. Little is wasted in a world where everything can be used for inspiration!
